The project, carried out in Erzurum at 2,050 metres above sea level, covers a 7.4-kilometre irrigation transmission tunnel of 4.2 metres in diameter and two regulator structures. The tunnel will irrigate 38,000 hectares of farmland and carry about 120 million cubic metres of water a year.
In harsh winter conditions the working season is limited to May – November. Two-direction advance (simultaneously from portals) was therefore used in tunnelling; pre-support and steel arch supports were used in a geologically difficult 340-metre section.
Progress
71% of the project is complete and lining concrete continues. Handover is planned for the summer season of 2027. The project employs more than 600 local workers a year.
Quality and OHS
Weekly progress reports, monthly payment certificate files and accredited laboratory test results were shared with the employer on the project. An OHS specialist worked on site full time, and daily risk assessment and pre-shift safety briefings were applied.
